I've have one of those new computers with the Serial
ATA feature, which I am not using; I'm just using the
standard ide1 and ide2.

During booting linux 2.4, there is a prolonged wait as
it establishes that hde (and hence hdf) is not there,
and a second wait as it establishes that hdg (and hence
hdh) is not there.

How do I tell it that I am not using these ports.

The problem is worse with Linux 2.6, which then tries
to reset both these ports, which takes as long again,
then tries again. The resulting delay is three times
the delay experienced with 2.4, which is in itself
annoying.

Thanks,
Greg Wood.
