Looks like a host name resolution problem on your side (dns cache corruption?).irc.freenode.net appears to be going in a loop from Optus.

Any suggestions, I am having IRC withdrawl.
What does "host irc.freenode.net" give you? What does the "hosts" line in your
/etc/nsswitch.conf say?
As a temporary work-around, here is the output of "host irc.freenode.net" on my machine:
irc.freenode.net has address 140.211.166.3 irc.freenode.net has address 140.211.166.4 irc.freenode.net has address 213.28.116.205 irc.freenode.net has address 216.55.181.3 irc.freenode.net has address 217.172.187.182 irc.freenode.net has address 82.96.64.2 irc.freenode.net has address 130.239.18.172
You should be able to use any of these addresses to connect (not testted).
Cheers,
