Hmm much weirdness. I installed host and it gave me:

$ host irc.freenode.net
irc.freenode.net        A       140.211.166.4
irc.freenode.net        A       213.28.116.205
irc.freenode.net        A       216.55.181.3
irc.freenode.net        A       217.172.187.182
irc.freenode.net        A       82.96.64.2
irc.freenode.net        A       130.239.18.172
irc.freenode.net        A       140.211.166.3

 and now:

$ ping irc.freenode.net
PING irc.freenode.net (216.55.181.3): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 216.55.181.3: icmp_seq=0 ttl=45 time=216.0 ms
64 bytes from 216.55.181.3: icmp_seq=1 ttl=45 time=231.6 ms

Seems to have been a temporary failure. Thanks for the help.
