Anchor is competitive on .au, but yes, GTLDs are a little pricey.

http://whatsinaname.com.au/
is out of date but helpful; most of those registrars do GTLD as well
as .au. Anchor in particular have .com.au domains $30 cheaper than
what's listed there, so do take it with the requisite quantity of salt.
