I tried using 

 artsdsp -m skype

which I think is the gnome equivalent of esddsp. As soon as I try to
connect a call, it gives an error similar to:  

read error, res = -1 , handle = 18

I can see some UDP packets go both out and in (this is connected to
echo123), but no sound.
