Ahuh!!! well i have just the thing for you!!!
*enter stage the ultimate HOWTO* http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=244949&highlight=radeon+7500+mobility
I highly recommend it...and though its gentoo specific it maybe useful to anyone with mobility radeons
I followed those instructions...and obviously altered things here and there (and my kernel settings are pretty different) but following that i got the 1400 glxgears! So its definately possible
Im running gentoo also
my xorg version= x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1
In my make.conf i have
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
and i have
opengl
in my use flags
Give it a try and see how you go...worked 100% for me (considering i originally was getting 250-300 in glxgears!!! thats terrible)

Hi Luke,
Out of interest... I've long given up trying to get my video card work properly... I have a Toshiba Tecra S1, Centrino 1.6 GHz, Radeon M(obility) 9000 but running glxgears never goes much beyond 800 fps...
I'm using XOrg 6.8.2 (on Gentoo), with the xorg-x11 drivers.
What x-server/drivers are you using?

Well if you want to do any tests...name them, and ill run them.
My specs are.
Dell Inspiron Notebook 5100 P4 2.66 512MB Ram 40 gig hdd + 200 gig external USB2
<...>
32MB Mobility Radeon 7000 (i think)
I'm not happy though...i had GLXGears running up at 1350 consistently...and i dont know what i have changed in my graphics options...but now i only get about 730-740, thats a huge decrease!
