Hmmm. Well i dont know thats strange (considering the imporvements i got)
The 3 main things i changed were adding opengl to the use flags and re-emerging xorg-x11,
including drm in my kernel and running # opengl-update xorg-x11
reading further down the page...it seems that some people had problems with newer versions of xorg

you have to downgrade x.org, because the new version is buggy
Code:
emerge =xorg-x11-6.8.0-r3
or the older 6.7 version, it's up to you
I got my laptop back from the repair shop and after upgrading to 6.8.x, more ATI issues. Sad My next laptop is not going to have an ATI card, this I swear!
Anyway, some looking around and found this: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1773
After putting:
Code:
Option "DynamicClocks" "true"in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file my glxgears is back to normal again.
I didn't update this in the first post because it's a 'bug' that I hope will have it's patched applied in the future and null this out.

I dont know too much about kernel modules or whatever...
but if you want any info, like my .config or other files / messages we can compare notes ;)

Thanks Luke,
I followed the link, there's little on that site that I'm not doing now, in fact only one option in the xorg.conf file is what differs.
I reran glxgears no improvement (in fact the rates dropped to 5 fps though this was fixed by a restart). Strangely enough... I've realized that if the glxgears window becomes invisible (ie is covered by another window) I get rates of 10000+ fps. I wonder if perhaps another extension is interfering with my setup.

Hi Luke,
Out of interest... I've long given up trying to get my video card work properly... I have a Toshiba Tecra S1, Centrino 1.6 GHz, Radeon M(obility) 9000 but running glxgears never goes much beyond 800 fps...
I'm using XOrg 6.8.2 (on Gentoo), with the xorg-x11 drivers.
What x-server/drivers are you using?

Well if you want to do any tests...name them, and ill run them.
My specs are.
Dell Inspiron Notebook 5100 P4 2.66 512MB Ram 40 gig hdd + 200 gig external USB2
<...>
32MB Mobility Radeon 7000 (i think)
I'm not happy though...i had GLXGears running up at 1350 consistently...and i dont know what i have changed in my graphics options...but now i only get about 730-740, thats a huge decrease!
