Hi John, I am a beginner too but had very little problem getting Apache up and running under Debian. Using bigpond cable I do not have a fixed IP but easily got around this by going to www.noip.com , you can register your own sub-domain name from those they provide and download their "IP update Client" keeps a redirection to your system's IP address, up to date.
