Thanks to Phil and Edwin for replies
I've been having the same problem with both Linux and XP boxes - ie unable
to access existing files on drives in Server.
I've been trying to setup my "Shares" using MepisControlCenter ( which
allows setting up of Samba) and smb4k.
Mepis Control Centre doesn't work, nor does smb4k.
Problem solved - sort of - by mounting each drive (on the Server) in
KDiskFree and right-clicking on drive to open it in Konqueror, then
right-clicking on each directory and selecting "Share" from the drop-down
menu and making appropriate changes. This works wereas attempting to do
similar in smb4k or MepisControlCenter doesn't work as changes do not "take".
Now when I use Konqueror on a Workstation to access the Server ( url
smb:/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/) it shows all folders as Shares and I can access them
PROVIDED the drives are already mounted on the Server.
Still that problem to sort out but at least I can access my data/files on
the Server, and I'd prefer the drives to show as a "Share" rather than each
directory on them. Guess that I can always create a "base" directory on
each drive and move all other directories into that.
I'll give NFS a try for my Linux boxes, but the problem was really related
to Permissions apparently.
Thanks again
Bill
