Are you a windows support person... ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the X server. gdm will create a new version with the new settings. Almost never a need to reboot a Linux machine. I note that easyubuntu has a setup for ATI cards. I use it but my screen is corrupted on boot until I switch to a character terminal with ctrl-alt-f1 then ctrl-alt-f7 and all is well. Strange really.
