Yep, ntpdate ran properly. That's what I used to set it to a
"tolerable" range for ntpd.
I'll try what Jamie suggested and give -g a shot. I'll also do the
kernel upgrade to 2.6.16 (currently using 2.6.15).

This much offset is uncorrectable by ntp. Did ntpdate run properly?
Usually there'll be kernel messages in /var/log/kern.log or wherever
they go on your system when the in-kernel phase-locked-loop acquires
or loses synch. RedHat/Fedora out-of-the box turns off some messages
though, so you may not see them.
