SLUG Videofest 13th May 2006
============================
On the Saturday before mother's day, about a dozen SLUGgers met at UTS to play with video software under Linux.
Video on Linux and in particular open source file formats like Ogg Theora are still a very young technology compared to e.g. the more than 20 year history that Quicktime on the Mac has. E.g. video editors on Linux exist for no more than 2 years and the video streaming technology that was used in the last 2 years of LCA is only just now becoming stable and (mostly) bug-free for recording.
In this first videofest we explored just about all existing Linux video technologies to gain a broad overview and introduction into the subject. The sw falls mainly in two categories: video production and (live) video streaming. Here is the list of technologies that we explored.
* video editors: Pitivi, Kino, Cinelerra, (Diva)
* video streaming: flumotion, icecast
* video players: Totem, Xine, VLC, mplayer
* tools: dvgrab, ffmpeg2theora, oggfwd, cmml-validate, anxenc
In future videofests we will have a stronger focus on one particular subject each.
Yay, this feels a lot like the initial days of Linux install- and codefests - lots of new stuff to learn and hack! :)
Cheers,
Silvia.
