The opportunity to use pre-compiled software doesn't necessarily put anyone
in the 'ordinary user' category. You asked a question, and a possible easier
route was suggested. That says more about the context of the discussion than
the tools you're using. It's easy to build MythTV on Ubuntu, but of course
you need to know the ins and outs of different distros to feel comfortable.
There were a few things you didn't know about package management and build
tools on Ubuntu; that's okay. Further questions were asked, and answers were
given. It's not hard, just different.

Given that there are mtd and jffs2 drivers in Ubuntu, the 'interestingness'
of it will probably be down to your familiarity with how to get things done
in an Ubuntu/Debian context... I have to adopt a different thought process
when I do sysadmin on Red Hat boxes, too. :-)

(Actually, what Mark described is pretty challenging on every platform, not
just Linux distributions. But he's coming from a pro audio perspective, not
a "sound card and USB headset" perspective, which is not so complicated.)
