Jeff thanks. As posted I used the make-dpkg scrip with --initrd. I assume that all was done correctly. The installation kernel, the apt-get kernel, my build all create a 'initrd'. This can be unwound. I've not investigated initramfs in detail (I know there are benefits, I know it's used, I don't know details) I assumed that an current make-dpkg would make the correct package parts (vmlinuz, initrd, config, System.map) (even if it's an initramfs) and it appears to do so. All that seems to be wrong is either missing images not appended to initrd or no fb to display them. Wrong wiki's or outdated info and a lack of current info seem to be plaguing me.
