Its not too hard to make a site that works well in all browsers,
especially if you allow for minor cosmetic differences!

In regards to pressuring the ATO for a linux version, remember
that they have dropped the macosx version this year. So likely
they arent looking to add another version. I believe that their
software was written in some sort of 'environment' called
eforms? which is no doubt outsourced.

Apparently only 1.8 million people submitted tax with etax last
year (only, in the sense that australia has ~20 million people)
and im not sure what % of those would care for a linux version.

Best bet is to make sure it runs in wine (which it does),
which is usually just asking for a well written program with
a no-nonsense installer.

personally, resorting to wine doesnt bug me that much, i use it for games and silly apps like e-tax. Comes down nicely with apt updates (using the winehq rep.) and seems to 'just work' with very little
fiddling.

sure, native is good, but running properly in wine is still extremely
helpful.

Hi all,

Some good news :)

I've just received a post from a friend who wrote to the ABS and received the following back

"Thank you for your inquiry regarding our web site and the e-Census form.

The eCensus testing program has included compatibility testing with a
range of operating systems and browsers. This has included testing on
Mac and Linux OSs as well as different versions of Windows. We have
tested with a variety of browsers including IE, Netscape, Firefox,
Safari and Konquerer. All have passed testing and the only
differences we are aware of are minor cosmetic ones."

Additionally this was posted to another group:

"For further information, please consult the 'Help' function in your browser or click on the link to:
Mozilla Firefox (Recommended for Apple Macintosh and Linux)

See: https://stream3.census.abs.gov.au/eCensusWeb/technical_help.html

I also did my census online (F'fox on KUbuntu 5.10) without a hitch. It was a much better experience than completing the paper form.

Additionally, I agree with James - we need to put more pressure on the ATO.

Patrick

What a pleasure, why-o-why can't the tax department wax clever, instead of all the IE rubbish? Can't someone rub their nose in it, like a naughty puppy
