[SLUG] Permissions

I have just mounted a new external hard drive in Dapper for backup and 
general storage purposes. However, when I try to write to it it tells me 
I do not have permission and it is for read only.

How do I tell it I can write to it? Also, should it be reformatted to 
suit Linux as it shows up as ntfs? If so, how?

All advice appreciated.
