I just installed Xubuntu on a laptop. A previous installation (from the same media) did not see the wireless card, but the latest did. I managed to configure Wep through the gui. The trick was knowing the format that it expected the WEP key - Pasting in the WEP key using the same format as the XP configuration dialog didn't raise any errors, yet still I couldn't ping anywhere. No on-screen hints that the hex digits are meant to be separated by hyphens in groups of 4, and that it has to be prefixed with "restricted ". Perhaps that would have been obvious to anyone who knows what they're doing (not me) or who has configured it through a .conf file in the past.
