Install a LiveCD version of Linux - Ubuntu,Kubuntu, Mepis,Knoppix ,
whatever, and tell them that should anything go wrong with the hard-disk
install then they can always boot from the LiveCD (preferably a distro
that automounts their hard-disk partitions) and still access their data
on the hard-drive. Make sure that you tell them that Windows can't do this.
I've used LiveCD's to rescue people's data for them when they have a
Windows breakdown, and it always amazes them, though usually not enough
for them to want to "relearn" how to use their PC with a different OS.
Also my 2c worth

Do I install and teach him 'doze/M$ Office or Ubuntu? Or, setup dual
boot and teach him both? Or, install Ubuntu and Cross Over office?
