I did note that it the logic was there, but not used due to decisions made
regarding Ubuntu's single CD design decision. If you install from DVD or
create a custom installer (netboot, CD, whatever), this logic will come into
play.

Hrm, my d-i fu is weak. It is one of the debian-installer packages, but I'm
not sure which one. You might want to have a look at some of the d-i docs,
or ask one of the developers. Few people actively get into this code.
