For the record, a working Wireless Card

The instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/RalinkRT61

Make a working driver for RaLink chipsets. Try knoppix or something, but
if
you get this chipset you CAN make it work.

Lucky you. I tried three different drivers for my RT61, two caused kernel
panics, the other simply did not work. After hours of prodding, I
discovered that the fact I was using AMD64 was to blame.

I reinstalled a 32bit system, and one of the drivers worked. Then I rebooted
and it hasn't worked since. At the moment I couldn't be bothered spending
another few hours on getting it to work, so I'm routing all my traffic
through my laptop.

By not working, I mean the driver loads, but iwconfig claims no wireless
extensions on the interface. Under AMD64, not working meant that iwconfig
worked, but the card did nothing. I have not managed to get WPA going at
all.
