I own an a few portable media players and to be honest Ive settled on the 5G
iPOD (30Gb) as my main media device because its easy to use and works
perfectly with Linux.

When I plug the iPOD in it just shows up as a USB storage device for me in
Kubuntu so I can just drag and drop files onto the disk.

I use Amarok to manage my playlists be it mp3's or podcasts.

For putting pictures (from my digital camera) on the iPOD one can use GPixPoD
with very little if any hassle (I didnt read anything to use it).

If thats not enough you can always install Linux on it (www.ipodlinux.org)
with the obvious result being you can pretty much play anything you want
(even games like doom).
