I use FreeNX to do this with my File Server on my Home LAN, also use it
to access my MultiMedia ( ie Music and Video/TV) PC attached to my
Stereo and Analogue TV.
Only thing is NX doesn't access actual running Desktop ( if you are
using the GUI), but starts another ( I assume virtual) desktop.
NX doesn't need a video card as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong
Still learning re such myself and still want to access actual desktop.

Hi folks.
Is there such a device as a "video card" that is actually a terminal
server? I.e., I can telnet/ssh into the console remotely and
independently of the actual computer? I have a server in the corner
that I don't want to attach a screen to, but need to be able to see the
bootup/shutdown sequence occasionally.
If so, what are they called, so I can start hunting one down?
