Hi Simon I have a friend who is an architect and he makes heavy use of SketchUp. It's now owned by Google and there is a free version available (Win/Mac only unfortunately).
But if you are after a "real" solution rather than a time-waster then it is probably worth a look. You could always run it under VMware on Linux (as I do for several Win-only programs). VMWare Server is now also a free download, and packages for Ubuntu are available in the canonical commercial repo: deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu feisty-commercial main HTH.
