You may want to consider Sabayon - it's a prebuilt version of Gentoo
that installs like Ubuntu/Fedora/etc, and has the whole box and dice
preinstalled (Open Office, KDE/Gnome, etc, etc).

I played with it for a while and quite liked it. I pretty quickly got
over the time it takes for Gentoo-like systems to compile packages, but
if you have a network of machines you can setup distcc to distribute and
speed up the builds.

I've gone back to Ubuntu because I'm travelling and know it better than
Gentoo.
