I'm travelling with my laptop at the moment (Mexico & Central America),
hence I'm often using wireless in internet cafes, backpackers, etc. Most
of the time they'll just say "the password for wireless is XXX". If you
ask them what the name of the network is they'll look at you blankly; if
you ask them what sort of encryption (wep, wpa, wpa2) they'll look at
you like a Martian... I presume this is because in Windoze you just
select a network and put in a password and it works out the encryption
type.

What heuristics to people take for connecting to these networks? Any
tools/scripts/techniques for working out the name of the closest network
and/or what sort of encryption a network uses?

At the moment I'm just limited to trying all the possible combinations
in NetworkManager (Ubuntu 7.04) until I eventually connect (or more
often, don't connect).

I've got Kismet setup, but if there's no n/w traffic, there's nothing to
detect. I'm also playing with aircrack-ng & wifi-radar to see if they
help...

Thanks,
