PS2 mice I would expect to 'just work' with any modern distribution. I would
not expect serial mice to work without some form of configuration (modifying
the xorg.conf file or using a graphical configuration tool of some sort).

As is generally the case with most distributions these days. I tend to think
it's dangerous to conclude that "foo works, bar doesn't" as a result of this
kind of experience.

You need not put it down to lack of skill, though!
