I had bad experiences with Realtek network chips and their
Linux drivers over a couple of years.

When gigabit ethernet was a little new. I was doing network testing
at the time and the network chip/driver would go into some weird
state where the interface was up but wouldn't pass packets. Required
a machine power cycle to make it work again. Also, even when the
card was pssing packet we could only get about 60-70% of the
throughput we could get with a NatSemi or Intel card.

Also had flakey behaviour at other times with Realtek based
cards. Personally I usually try to get hardware with Intel 
networking stuff.
