On older debian/ubuntu installs you can use deborphan to find any
packages that are no longer required. Then if you also install wajig
(an commandline apt frontend amongst other things) you can do
something similiar to 'apt-get autoremove'
eg:
wajig remove <package>
wajig removeorphans
