Regardless of which distro or distro version you are using, replacing
the distro installed package with something you compile yourself is
almost always a bad idea, especially when you are downgrading.

You probably don't need it.

Since freetype isn't listed there, you either have a broken
version of pkg-config or your installation is in a weird
state.

What is your version of pkg-config (ie --version will tell you)?
Was it installed from your distro's package manager?

Also what Linux distro are you using and what release?
