Hi Daryl,
Don't know if this will help you but when I had a similar problem I was
advised to find and delete the following files:

/lib/modules/2.6.17-11-generic/volatile/nvidia.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-11-generic/volatile/nvidia_legacy.ko
/lib/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.17-11-generic/nvidia
/lib/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.17-11-generic/nvidia_legacy

and then install the nvidia drivers again. This worked for me.
One other thing to check would be what settings are being used for your
monitor. They may be the problem.
