There is a companion product available for Telstra BigPond USB wireless
broadband modems that provides an ethernet gateway. It is called Maxon
EtherMax, available from Maxon Australia at Padstow. This device is
described as a USB docking station or an ethernet router.
Basically, a compatible wireless modem is plugged into the USB port on
the Maxon EtherMax, which connects to a LAN to share the Internet
connection. Setup is via a web browser to the gateway address of
192.168.0.1 .
A number of years ago I purchased the Telstra BigPond wireless broadband
retail kit with a standalone CDMA modem. This modem required a USB
connection to a computer running Windows XP, with custom software called
BigPond wireless connection manager. At that time I used Windows
internet connection sharing to provide Internet access to my Linux
notebook over a LAN.
When the time came to migrate to the Next G network, I became aware that
the Maxon EtherMax device could provide Internet access to a Linux box
without the need for a Windows box or any connection manager software.
Great!
Telstra BigPond provides a free files download service for its users. Of
interest to this forum, this File Library includes recent versions of
Ubuntu, and other Linux distros, and apps. After the release of Ubuntu
8.10, I downloaded 10GB of Ubuntu iso's for free, along with 3GB of
paid-for data. No complaints re Telstra network performance and
accessibility!
