Good question. When I boot into the BIOS there is a temperature reading that can be affected by spraying a freezing compound onto the CPU the temperature shown by the BIOS drops and then rises again. That suggests that the sensors are working. I have also tried setting the polling frequency using: echo 30 > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/polling_frequency and then checking that value using cat.
