Ubuntu boots happily from a USB stick. I haven't tried booting off an SD card using the internal reader; I do know that in the list of boot options, only USB, internal HD, and network are listed - but perhaps the SD reader is on the USB bus *shrug* https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
