Works for me for the past two years with Ubuntu and Debian and 
openSuSE.  I use these because it's easy to install Nvidia drivers.

 2 Gb works fine.  No need to upgrade.  I'm running Gnome and KDE 4.3 
and AWN together on the same desktop.
