Do proper, full backup (dd is my personal favorite, but I guess there are more sophisticated tools nowdays), do the upgrade and test if anything went wrong? If it is 'complicated' unlikely that anyone can answer your question (although you may get some misleading 'everything went fine' emails) , so full backup is a must anyway.
