I have never experienced a seamless upgrade of any Ubuntu
distribution, so I second the recommendation to do a full backup
before attempting the upgrade. Ubuntu does some fairly vast changes
between revisions, and seeing as you're skipping a whole major release
in the upgrade, bad things could happen.

As for what to backup with, I use ddrescue as it has a nicer interface
for showing copying speed and error rate.
