If you installed without fiddling, then you need apt-get install gnome before Ken's 'just click' will work. I just tried all the gnome options but was unable to get right-click the panel (task bar) to offer the usual Add-Widgets etc. I will spelunk, does xfce off weather and cpu-freq aplets? But ... it seems to me that Heracles' advice is ummm sound!
