Those who forget history are bound to repeat it. People complained the same way
in the transition from GNOME 1 to GNOME 2, and everyone eventually agreed it
was better.
Anyone here still using GNOME 1 and GTK 1.2?
Funny you should say that.
I have an old machine I keep around just for nostalgia sake. I booted
into Redhat 7.1 (dual boots with Redhat 9) the other day just for kicks.
I was thinking that the environment was quite good, I would much rather
run gnome 1 over gnome 3 any day. Asking who runs gnome1 and gtk 1.2
does not prove anything, I love gnome2 but abandoned it because it is
now legacy code, I would be quite happy with gnome1 but no software is
written for it any longer.
Another interesting thing is, one of my observations is that gnome 3
seems to be implementing many things that *have* been tried before and
failed/reverted, so perhaps it is gnome that is repeating history (the
bad bits) rather than the users. Gnomes whole spacial fiasco was just a
prelude to what was to come ( spacial was not good in win95, so lets put
it in gnome!! )
Food for thought, from an ex gnome fanboy.
