It depends. But it is mainly running on Framebuffer, and 256MB of RAM isn't alot. However, you can take a look at spu-medialib. It uses the spu for rendering and is good enough to render at full HD, 1080p. It is still worth it if you want to try out Power4 arch and spu programming.

Ya, it is a pity they don't expose the GPU.

It may be nice running a lightweight netbook desktop - perhaps moblin clutter.

I see there is work on an SPU port of mesa under the new galium driver architecture, while not using the GPU, it should gain a bit of grunt from the SPU. Although I'm afraid the sort of exercise in getting this running would not be for the faint of heart.

It is a breeze for yellow dog. But I'd recommend replacing the 80GB HDD with at least 500GB or larger one. Btw, you can't have both Gbit ethernet and Wifi on at the same time, it is either one or the other, not sure if
you can use a usb wifi dongle.

Did some for fun, but I am using OpenCL right now, on nvidia cards but there are things
that SPU can do that OpenCL can't.

Incidentally, Intel Larrabee is very similar in arch.

Sounds interesting. I've been taking a glance at OpenCL lately (as it has popped up in latest XCode on Snow Leopard) but have not had a chance to write anything for it yet...

I would be interested to catch up at some point to hear about your experiences...
