What a way to start National day!
Hmmmm, I am not sure how I see mobile smart phones decreasing the importance of
the Windows and Linux desktop. Please kindly elaborate.

We are not quite there yet in rendering windows irrelevant. Why? Because
majority of the society see computers as very complex tools and won't easily
switch to another OS. Therefore, end users are resistant to change from a sense
of familiarity with a complex tool. IIRC, there are still people using IE6
based
on some report I read this year. And look at how Microsoft got away with the
kind of product Vista was.

Linux desktops would have gone the way of the dodo if they had remained
stagnant. But imho, I have seen improvements in performance, driver support,
usability and aesthetics over the last 5 years. As long as there is constant
innovation in the FOSS projects related to Desktop Linux, I think Linux
Desktops
are here to stay.

I don't have much insights about the browser as a platform. I think it remains
too early to say whether it will have any significant impact on Windows or Linux

PS. I am a recent mac owner (due to work reasons) and frankly I can't get used
to it the way I picked up linux 5 years ago. But that may just be me. And yes I
have a linux bias :)
