I know Moe and Danny well enough to know that, if they're doing it
that way, they have a damn good reason.  :-)

That said, in the general case, the rule still applies.  Having those
autotools-generated files in the repository creates a lot of
unnecessary churn and potential conflicts between systems with
differing versions of the autotools.  There's a whole slew of pain to
be had doing merges between branches maintained with seperate
autotools versions!  But with a small development team, especially if
they're all running the same OS on their dev boxes, it's probably not
a huge issue.
