Title: RE: [smartBridges] POE flakey???
Nish,
The blue light was not visible from inside the house.  The unit was on the roof with 70 ft of cable.

I also realize that this does not totally sound logical...but not totally unbelievable either.

I would like to do some more testing...but it seems as though this should be sB's job.  If I were you, I would setup a wireless sniffer (packet level) and filter for the suspected bad unit's IP or MAC.  Then play with (very technical terms) the POE chrome connector until you can get it to reproduce the "bad" results.  I think that when the unit does not have sufficient voltage, then it does one of two things: 1. Does not transmit or 2. Does not receive.  In either case, it will not regain association.

Wirelessly sniffing the packets should point you in the right direction.  I am too busy signing up new clients.  Now that I know EXACTLY how to test my POE while at the installation site (not on the bench), I feel confident that I can continue to expand with solely sB equipment.

Im sure you guys will figure it out soon enough.

In the mean time...feel free to shoot 50 of those new SUPERSHOTS my way.  I will be more than happy to test them out for you.  (-;

Sully,

Thanks for the detailed observations. On the surface this does not sound logical. But with so many of you chiming in, our Product Engineering guys have started to work on the issue and they already had a meeting with the supplier to tighten the tolerance.

Establishing a conclusive link to dis-association problem may take some time. Do you happen to notice if the Blue light was flashing when the units had lost association?

The RJ45 boot issue was fixed a few weeks ago. The supplier has been asked to use software material for the cover.

Subject: [smartBridges] POE flakey??? Lost association

More info:  My 3rd and final misbehaving airBridge is now fixed.  I was JUST about to climb the roof for a radio replacement when I decided to try something first.

First thing I noticed on this unit, which has been down for 1.5 days, is that the Ethernet light on the NIC was not illuminated.  That initially had me thinking the airBridge was bad.  I then unplugged the chrome power cable from the POE unit and plugged it back in.  I instantly got my green light on the NIC again and was able to ping the airBridge again.  A couple seconds later I regained association and was able to surf.

I then unplugged the chrome power connector and plugged it back in again.  I lost association (obviously), but did not gain it back.  I did this while having 2 DOS windows open and a constant ping to both the airBridge and the Gateway.  The airBridge would always regain its ping response immediately after restoring power...but the association would sometimes not come back (the ping back to the gateway).  So...I continued to play with the plug until I found a very small "sweet spot" where if I unplugged the chrome connector and plugged it back in (while in that exact small sweet spot), the unit would regain association every time.  However, anywhere else around the 360 degree axis would not.

So...I tried another POE unit (with same wall power supply) and tried this all over again.  The new POE unit worked better but not flawlessly.  This unit had a VERY large sweet spot and very small bad spot (opposite of other POE unit).  So...I made a couple white hash marks on the chrome connector that ensures that I always had the alignment correct when unplugging and plugging it back in.  When properly aligned, the unit would always regain association.

So...I believe the radio is good and the POE is crap!!!!

Hope this info helps some others from pulling there hair out...or going through the RMA process for radios.

Thanks for pointing up the quality issue on our Powershot PoE. We will address both of the issue (no power or bad Ethernet connection) and with better quality check at the factory. We also will look into changing the “hood” to softer PVC material so that it is easy to press.

We need a SB response to this issue.

Confirmed.  I have had this issue since the first one I bought.
