You are basically right.  RX gain is simply an amplified signal, noise and all, that you have already received from the antenna.  However, if the signal is weak enough that it is already bumping the noise floor, all the RX amplification in the world will not pull it out as you are amplifying the noise right along with the signal.

The best scenario for two stations attempting to communicate with one another when amplification is necessary, is for both stations amplify the TX signal.  The amplified TX signal will give the receiving radio a better signal to noise ratio to work with to begin with.

Any amp will introduce some noise into the signal.  No powered electronic circuit is noise free.  Antennas, being passive elements in the system, will not introduce any noise into the signal.  Therefore, you are always better off to use a higher gain antenna rather than an amp if at all possible.

What is RX gain? Can you break it down to me because I really thought the TX gain was the item that is upped to fix cable loss and the RX gain was increased to increase the actual signal pulled from the client (listening better)

Some people think amps are an alternative to high gain antennas. Just
trying to steer them the right way. ;-D
