Run the coax from the antenna to a lightning arrestor then to the aPPO. Make sure the lightning arrestor itself is well grounded. As Eje suggested a few months ago on this list, you can get good lightning arrestors on eBay for much less than from a distributor. If you get the ones with N Female in and N Male out, you won't need two pigtails, just screw the arrestor onto the radio. Waterproof it like there's no tomorrow.
