What would be sB recommended way of supporting 1000 (or more) users that may within range of an WAP ?
Start lobbying the FCC for more spectrum? ;-)
To tell me that there's a limit of 128 concurrent clients, while understandable, is not heart-warming - I'd rather see a limit of 256, or even higher (ie. 512, 1024). If you need to boost your units CPU & RAM & a 100MB NIC instead of a 10MB NIC, then all I can say is: "Just Do It." - thank you Nike.
No offense, but.. It isn't the unit that needs boosting - it is 802.11b that needs boosting for a single AP to handle more than ~60 concurrent clients.
The only thing I get out of your answer is that I should continue shopping around.
Then you need to go looking for something else than 802.11b. The 802.11 MAC layer wasn't really designed for outdoor use, but people use it because the hardware is fairly cheap and it works good enough in many situations. Good enough that WISPs are popping up like mushrooms all over the place.
If you want something better, you need to go for proprietary/ expensive/licensed equipment or wait for 802.16a.
