1. If you use the Repeater mode, the repeater uses the same channel and ESSID as the Access Point. You can set your clients to roaming with your ESSID and they will grab which ever unit has the best signal. The repeater alternates between a client device and an access point, so of it is far away from your main access point, it may not be getting a very good signal. For sake of argument say it is only able to connect at the 1 meg speed rather than 11 meg. Now you halve that and everyone using the repeater site is sharing 500K. In addition, if you have a lot of customers on the repeater, you are forcing the main Access point to run in the 1 meg mode most of the time, slowing down everyone there.
2. If you use 2 separate radios, a client and an AP at the repeater site, you will need to use 2 different ESSID's and channels. Users won't easily be able to grab which ever Access point is better. However you no longer have the half speed issue and you can also use a directional antenna on the link back to the main AP and maintain a faster and better connection. And you have to pay for twice as much equipment with this method. We do both depending on our needs. As long as you are aware of the limitations and advantages of each method, either will work well.
