802.11b has 3 non-overlapping channels available. They are ch 1, ch 6, and ch 11. With those limitations you are able to put up to 6 APs in one location. 3 that are vertically polarized and 3 horizontally polarized. There has to be enough separation between them to reduce the chances of interference between them. Six feet of vertical separation is much better than six feet of horizontal.
There are some that are taking a slight performance hit on purpose in order to expand their channel capabilities. They are using channels 1, 4, 8, and 11. This does work, and can help in congested areas. Most people tend to try OMNIs because they are very easy to set up, and cheap because it's one antenna for a 360 degree coverage. Typically over time, and with some experience most switch to sector antennas of 120 degrees or less. Our preference is 90 degrees.
