A true hub will retransmit ALL packets across ALL interfaces, regardless of the type.  A switch SHOULD only transmit packets to the interface that are destined for the interface, based on the learned MAC addresses of the devices on that interface, including broadcast traffic.

Switches are good for reducing broadcast traffic on large networks by splitting the network up into smaller broadcast domains.

Hub = bad
Switch = good
Router = best

Subject: [smartBridges] Hubs vs Switches

I'm seeing some emails on this list that hubs will spread data all over the network.  If I have 2 computers connected by a hub to a aB, is this a bad design?  Should I replace the hub with a switch?
