Ok little back round on how standard cable data networks a built from the customer to the head end:
1. Customer, you have the cable modem which can go up to 27Mb on a 6Mhz cable channel with QAM64 2. From the customer location this goes out to the main coax feed line that serves between 500-1000 homes 3. From the feed line this goes to a fiber node which takes all the signals back to the head end via light. Note: To clarify 500-1000 homes passed with an average 10% take rate for data is 50-100 homes with 27Mb to the head end! 4. At the head end the fiber is converted back to RF and plugged in the single port on what's called a CMTS 5. Most CMTS have 8 ports, 7 are for the remote fiber nodes each port having 27Mb 6. CMTS's are plugged in to a standard switch and the rest most of you know from there. Ok so the conclusion is the cable data network have PLENTY of bandwidth going from the head end to the customer using only one 6Mhz cable channel! The weak link is always there backend network and upstream. Using 10 to 1 each customer is good up to 2.7Mb down with out even coming closet of over loading the system. Note: on the upstream they are more limited, this is because a more robust but lower bandwidth modulation is need to make it back to the head end, called QPSK, this has 1/4th the bandwidth of QAM64 which is why you will almost always find slower speed up stream speeds.
