I've only recently had the opportunity to put together a sniffer that has actually worked very well. It cost me less than $500 to put it all together and I'm VERY happy with it's performance.
- HP iPaq 2215 $ 379.00 - SanDisk CF 802.11b Card $ 69.00 Pop the little silver cover off of the CF card and there is a U.FL connector on the circuit board. At least I think that's the type it is. I used plyers and ripped their little metal strip antenna out and soldered a pigtail on to the contacts and with an RP-SMA connector on the other end I can use the little rubber ducky antennas from the SB indoor gear, or the WET11, or hook it up to the 9db omni on my truck. Software on the iPaq is Windows Mobile 2003 and PocketWarrior. The purpose of putting this together, at least for me, was to be able to have something very small that didn't require AC power that I could take up on a roof and do a site survey. The added bonus is I get to see every Access Point within close proximity, whether they are using WEP or not, and their signal strength. I'll have pictures of what I did on our web site soon.
